Applications for CAPL Courseware

The CAPL system incorporates several applications into a virtual language lab on the machine: (1) Menu Screen, (2) On-line Text Preview, (3) Articulation Drills, (4) Word Drills, (5) Sentence Drills, (6) Speech Rhythm Drills (target rhythm), (7) Speech Rhythm Drills (target template), (8) Training Status (see Figure 2.12). The Menu Screen is the main window in which learners communicate with the CAPL system. By clicking the ICON buttons, they can initiate the corresponding application. Also, they can choose the target scenario on the scenario selection list. The On-line Text Preview module plays the movie files containing the explanation or situation of the target scenario. For each practicing drills, functional buttons are provided for user-access convention. For example, Clicking on the PREV or NEXT button on the bottom of the window allows the learners to select the target word or sentence in the scenario. Clicking on the PLAY or HEAR button allows them to listen to the model speech or their speech. The RECORD button permits the learners to record their speech for practice. By pushing the ANALYSIS button, they can get an evaluation about their pronunciation. For reference, these GUI buttons are depicted with the circle in Figure 2.12. The Training Status module gives the information how much their pronunciation is improved and what kinds of sounds are critically detected.
