In general, there are several places in the mouth where the airstream is obstructed in the formation of consonants. Each consonant can be classified in terms of the place in the mouth where the articulators cause an obstruction of the airstream. Such an obstruction is reflected in the the acoustic features, principally the changes in formant frequency, and it is indeed that we use the major features for place of articulation to verify the features of consonant sounds by non-native learners.
