4.6 Conclusion

This system is just a first step in Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Learning. We need to evaluate the reliability and effectiveness of the current CAPL system for many learners of Japanese over a long period of time.

As future work, improvements were suggested in several areas: (1) In vowel feedback, the graphic indication of lip position (spread or rounded) is also required; (2) The instruction for prosodic features, i.e., rhythm and accent, is indispensable in pronunciation learning. In the current system, they are only displayed on the visual representation window; and (3) Special feedback methods must be considered for the Japanese /N/ sound that depends on the following consonant. On the whole, the feedback method was acknowledged to be useful by system evaluators and the non-native learners.
