Theoretical Basis

In order to be useful in real-world applications, we believe that the design and implementation of CAPL system should be closely related to phonetics. Phonemics used for the study of speech looks at sounds as they are perceived and thought of by speakers of a particular language, whereas phonetics is independent of any particular language. Consequently, it is useful as a practical way to train L2 pronunciation for non-native learners.

The principal goal of phonetics is to provide an exact and unambiguous description of every known speech sound. Articulatory phonetics considers how any given speech sound is produced in terms of the positions of vocal organs. In acoustic phonetics, the emphasis is on observable, measurable characteristics in the waveforms of speech sounds, especially those which enable them to be distinguished from one another. This concept has already become the backbone of current speech recognition technology. Figure 1.2 shows the illustrative relationship between theoretical basis of phonetics vs. our target fields. It will be discussed in detail in section 2.4.
